About the Zed1 Team Fixtures Plugin

The zed1 Team Fixtures Plugin provides a theme wdiget which allows you to display the next fixture for your favourite sports team on your blog.

It allows you to select two teams from drop down lists, type in the date, time, and competition and then save the changes. You can also specify which TV or Satellite channel the match will be shown on.

There is a demo of the widget in action on the zed1 demo site.

The venue was packed, the first time there’d been anything like that at Gigbeth this year, and we only saw the end of Cutting Pink With Knives - enough to see that I’d like to see more tho’. Capsule have pulled together another storming line-up - The Plight (hairy sweary from Leeds) show everyone else how it’s done in the foot-up-on-monitor stakes. The bass player almost sinks into his when he decides one foot isn’t rock enough. The Plight in graph form:

The site is a standard WordPress blog, customised heavily through the theme and plugin APIs. Customisations include allowing visitors to search for particular types of content (e.g. video), rate posts, for the Navy to feature bloggers, Flickr and lightbox integration for photos, YouTube integration for video, podcasting and an on-page player for audio, listings for all authors, enhanced author pages with a media carousel which allow visitors to see all media uploaded by that author and the “status” of the author, enhanced workflow for authors to submit their posts to be published and to receive feedback from the publishing staff, and loads more… phew!

Visit: http://jackspeak.royalnavy.mod.uk

Who Designed the Theme

The visual design was provided by TwentySix, who led the Jack Speak project. The HTML for the theme is based on Sandbox, the theme for themers, customised by Simon Wheatley to the requirements of TwentySix’s design, and the CSS was written from scratch by Simon Wheatley.

Tell Us About You And Your Blog(s)

Hi! I’m Jonnya, I’m a freelance graphic designer and web consultant based in Birmingham, West Midlands. I have been freelancing for over 6 years and work for a range of ad agencies and independent clients, previous to which I worked at an ad agency for nearly 3 years.

The site I have entered under the ‘Content’ category is Photoshop Ninja - a blog that’s full of tips, tricks and downloads for Photoshop.

I also designed the Ramada Birmingham Oldbury website entered into the ‘Design’ category for a West Midlands based marketing agency called Tango Marketing Communications.

How Long Have You Been Blogging?

I have been creating websites for around 10 years and began working with content management systems around 5 years ago. When blogs started developing, I began looking at them as a CMS platform - and when I tried WordPress out in 2005 (with the launch of Photoshop Ninja) I realised straight away I had found the perfect CMS (or blog if you prefer!). Since then I have developed all my CMS based sites using WordPress.

Why Do You Blog?

I write content for Photoshop Ninja because enjoy sharing my knowledge with people - it’s my way of giving a-little back to the Internet design community, from whom I’ve learned a-lot from over the years! I tend not to write stuff on getting wacky effects (which the net is full of), concentrating on the expert studio techniques I use day in day out. It also gives me a good platform to try out new WordPress plugins and script modifications on a site with a fair amount of content and traffic!

What Are You Hoping To Get From WordCamp UK?

I’m looking forward to hearing the presentations and meeting some like-minded WordPress developers. I’d like to see how other people are using WordPress, in particular SEO, user interaction and community development.

It may also give me the chance to make some useful freelance developer contacts to assist me with more time consuming tasks or tricky tasks in WordPress in the future - I am always on the look out for skilled coders as I’m responsible for web project management at a marketing company based in the West Midlands, in addition to my own projects of-course!

Got A Picture So We Can Recognise You At WordCamp UK?

I don’t normally do pictures… but here’s a rare moment caught on film March 2008 whilst on holiday - I wear slightly different glasses now and tend to not look quite as chilled out! For further reference I wear my hair in a shoulder-length ponytail, which is kinda tricky to see in the pic!

About BloggingBrum

Whilst listening to a podcast I was surprised to hear that Manchester was now considered the UK’s second city, and I felt something needed to be done about it. Rather than shouting from the rooftops and listing our many creative and arts-based festivals, groups and communities I thought it would be simpler to tell people plainly why we think Birmingham is as great as it is.

Website Accessibility is Still Misunderstood

Post Extract

I’ve just read an excellent article about blind users still struggling with computer obstacles. Now I can only comment from a web perspective but it seems to me people are still missing the point when it comes to accessibility.

From the Blogger

Many of the posts on my blog are rants in reaction to items I’ve read online or feeds I’m subscribed to. My post about website accessibility is no different but in this case it was the blatant ignorance of some comments on an article I read about accessibility that spurred me into writing the post. Although my blog is therapeutic for my mental outpourings I hope this post also gives a slightly different angle to the issue of website accessibility - one that brings real advantages to the actual websites and not just those who are perceived to benefit from accessibility.
